Brief History of Lions Club of Park Orchards in the eyes of one of the Charter Members
Nearly 50 years strong and still going.
The Lions Club of Park Orchards has built a proud reputation for delivering meaningful, hands-on service to both local and international communities.
Among its most significant international initiatives is the establishment of a first-aid station along the Kokoda Track in Papua New Guinea, providing vital assistance to trekkers on this historic and demanding route. The Club also funded the construction of a new four-classroom school built on a greenfield site in the slums of Nairobi, Kenya, creating life-changing educational opportunities for children in need.
More recently, the Club co-funded a newly completed water well project in Ikpro, near Yambio, South Sudan, delivering clean, fresh water to a village of 5,000 people — a transformative outcome for the entire community.
The Club continues its international commitment through ongoing support of four underprivileged students in the “Squalor to Scholar” program, assisting them from early primary years through to the completion of Year 12. It has also sponsored a challenged young person to walk the Kokoda Track — an experience that proved truly life-changing.
Closer to home, the Club provides strong support to Camp Respite at the Lions Village Licola. These camps offer invaluable relief for families of children with special needs and are supported in part by proceeds from the Club’s long-running Car Rally fundraising project.
The Lions Club of Park Orchards has also responded swiftly to urgent local needs, facilitating pallets of bedding to assist the Maroondah Men’s Shelter and ensure winter bedding requirements were met.
Within the local community, the Club runs the Lions Mobile Skin Cancer Screening Program, delivering accessible early detection services. Through ongoing support for medical research, assistance to communities devastated by fire and flood, and recognition of leadership and sporting achievement, the Lions Club of Park Orchards continues to exemplify service, compassion and true community spirit.
